The challenge
An embedded vision platform needed to change between active and inactive GMSL camera configurations while the device remained operational. Rebooting for each camera change would interrupt the application and make service or dynamic configuration workflows impractical.
Engineering approach
Crossware isolated the minimum hardware description required to enable the serializer and image sensor dynamically. Device-tree overlays were coordinated with the Linux media controller and V4L2 pipeline, while kernel-level behaviour was traced and patched where runtime removal did not behave reliably.
Validation under changing hardware state
The implementation was tested beyond a single happy path. It covered initial enable and disable, physical hot-connect, live disconnect and reconnect, and repeated recovery of the camera pipeline. Scripts and the operating sequence were documented so the result could be reproduced and integrated by the wider platform team.
Delivered capabilities
- Camera enable and disable without a system reboot
- Device-tree overlays for serializer and image-sensor nodes
- Kernel analysis and targeted patching
- Media-controller and V4L2 pipeline coordination
- Validated hot-connect, disconnect and reconnect scenarios
- Reproducible integration scripts and technical documentation
Outcome
The result turns a static camera configuration into a controllable runtime capability. It is particularly relevant for modular vision products, service scenarios and systems in which camera availability can change during operation.
